This whistle has a nice sound. I have 3 tin whistles and this one is my favorite. It is easy for me to play the higher octave compared to my other two. I am just learning and only play a few tunes. I like to improvise. I'm a guitar player, so I have tunes in my head to work out on it. Not a lot to pay for the enjoyment that comes from playing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, December 28, 2010
This review is from: Clarke Pennywhistle in Key of D
I am a novice guitarist in my 40's and have never played a penny whistle before so have no comparison of simular instruments. I got this and was playing the D scale minutes, from there it was a quick jump to playing some simple songs. After a bit of practice the tones where constant and sweet. The whistle comes with an instruction sheet that shows the fingering of the notes (very helpful for the rank beginner) on one side with a couple of easy tunes on the reverse side.
From other reviews I take it that the wooden mouth piece gives this whistle a softer tone than others which is probably best for the beginner. I was able to practive in one room without disturbing my wife in the next.
The wooden mouth piece and black/gold paint job gives this instrument a nice look as opposed to some others which look like toys.
I would not hesitate to give this as a gift to an experieinced musician or someone who I wanted to introduce to music.

Clarke has been making pennywhistles since the mid-19th century, so they have plenty of experience. This instrument--while obviously costing much more than a penny--plays very easily and projects well, especially in the upper register. The only real concern that I have is that the untreated wood block might swell up when playing for a long time, or that it might change shape slightly over time. The Clarke Celtic Tin Whistle, which I will review separately, is also a nice alternative. The advantages to the Celtic Tin Whistle are (1) the plastic mouthpiece should be impervious to changes as a result of moisture, and (2) it actually projects a little better in the lowest octave. I've owned one of Clarke's MEG pennywhistles for some time, and it is also a workable instrument. The intonation on the Pennywhistle in D, though, is better than on either of the Clarke instruments with the plastic mouthpieces. This seems to be because this instrument has an optimal volume at which the... Read more
