5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, inexpensive tin whistle, August 7, 2010
This review is from: Clarke Original Penny Whistle "D"
This is an excellent, inexpensive tin whistle. The wooden fipple gives it a much quieter and mellower sound than the "Irish" style whistles with plastic mouthpieces. I am a beginning pennywhistler and have tried several inexpensive brands, but this truly has the loveliest and most mellow sound and is much easier on the ears. My wooden fipple was slightly rough on the lower lip and caused my lips to dry out more quickly, so I used a tiny bit of fine gauge sandpaper on the surface of the wood itself, then applied a very light coat of pure beeswax. Problem solved!

The whistle was shipped the very next day after I ordered it, and it arrived two days later. Very pleased. As for the whistle itself, it is VERY difficult to play compared to my Oak Classic key of C whistle. When you get it and first start playing it, chances are you'll start out playing the second octave. It takes an insane amount of air control to play the first octave, because it requires little to no breath, and it is VERY soft and quiet. This new whistle does sound amazing though. It's crystal clear. 4/5 for the product because of how quiet the lowest octave is. 5/5 for the seller.

EDIT: After playing around with the whistle for a couple hours, I'd like to change my rating to 5/5. It took a lot of effort, but I've figured out how to play the lowest register better. Now I can play it at that volume where it sounds soft enough to make that beautiful, mellow sound, but loud enough to for people to hear and enjoy. When you first get this whistle,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Whistle, September 11, 2010

A very pretty and classic conical tin whistle. Still made with rolled tin and a wood fipple. A farily pure flute-like breathy tone with very little if any chiff. Easy to play in both octaves, but does take a bit more than average ammout of breath. Plays in very good tune. A little quieter than other straight bore brass whistles in the same price range. If you can't stop buying tin whistles like me, this is a must have in your collection.
