It looks like a decorative trinket you'd find in an Egyptian tourist shop but the music it makes is just breathtaking. If you have never played an open-end flute before don't expect to be making sweet melody right off the bat. It took me half an evening and a couple of YouTube videos to figure out how to get a sound out of it. After two days of practice I could get some pretty decent music out of it. Overall I am very satisfied with it.
It is a smaller size of kawla in the key of D (there are many sizes). I can see why this size would be popular with western musicians because its fundamental register is the same as a Celtic tin whistle. Because of its cylindrical-ish bore the second register is a major second lower than a tin whistle (with its reverse conical boar) so the highest note of the first register is the same as the lowest note of the second.
