The mouthpiece is very different from a shakuhachi. It is more like a regular flute with a south american quena mouthpiece, and although it is played somewhat like a shakuhachi in that it is endblown, it lacks the characteristic sound of the shakuhachi, and notes cannot be bent in the same way a shakuhachi can as the previous reviewer noted. But I have to mention the utuguchi (the to of the flute/mouthpiece) is rather difficult to blow and looks diffrent from the traditional mouthpieces. And I can't make a sharp or a flat tone by close � of the hole, which is a must when playing. But I'm not a shakuhachi player. Never tried a shakuhachi before actually. I usually play Native American cane or cedar flutes, as well as a suling, so it took me a bit to get nice notes out of this one, as it is harder to play, but the sound is wonderful, and the flute itself is gorgeous. Wonderful instrument, especially at this price. |
